Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food. ~Hippocrates

Some restaurants are now offering healthier options, taking the guesswork out of meal decisions. Some have special “diet” sections (I hate that. It makes me feel deprived), while others can prepare dishes in a healthier way. Last month I ate at a restaurant that offered some of their dishes in a lighter version – a 500 calorie meal. The problem with restaurant meals is often that they are much too large. Even if they are reasonably healthy, they can still be made unhealthy if they have too many calories, fat and/or sodium.

If your favorite restaurant doesn’t offer alternatives, you are on your own. Here are some strategies to help you eat a little better, even when nutrition information is not available.

The best strategy is to ask for a take out box WITH your meal. Put half in it before starting your meal. If it’s not in your plate, your less likely to eat it.

Order a salad, lightly dressed. It will fill you up so you will want to eat less of your entree.

Inquire about ingredients in your dish. Ask for reduced fat/oil in the preparation.

If you still want dessert, get one for the table and multiple forks. Sharing is nice!

Finally, ask the restaurant if they would consider creating several healthy dishes if they don’t already have a section.Taste and appeal need not be sacrificed. Beware however, of additional salt or sugar to compensate for fat.
. . . . . and Bon appetite!
